This two week charrette was an exercise in designing good rooms, spaces with a distinct character and suggested programs.  This Montessori classroom uses a series of layered an overlapping spatial volumes to create conditions suited for the various types of Montessori work.  Small work, big work, group work, quiet work, loud work, messy work, all have various overlapping yet distinct spaces defined.  The importance of the shelf is highlighted by creating a multi-modal wall system which functions as a brise soleil, storage and gallery for tools.  The project seeks to open many ongoing threads of questioning which will be carried forward into the semester long study for a Montessori school commons.
